The Wise Owl Finch’s Escape!

Posted by on Jan 23, 2016 in FAQ's | No Comments

Owls are known in the bird kingdom for being the wisest of them all. And apparently, the owl finch got its name for this reason.  Although arguably, they do resemble owls a little bit!

Recently, one of these little guys attempted a daring escape from the owner of Bevy of Birdhomes herself! The incident occurred on a sunny afternoon while she was transporting the owl finch to a new home.  Now, to provide a little background, the owl finch is not the first bird in the history of the company to make it out of their home.  This happens quite frequently, much to the amusement of all those around—except,  of course, the people in charge of their capture; however, this little bird tried something new—he  took off outside!

If you are reading this and have had a past experience with a bird escape, you probably have learned that after a while, the bird usually returns to perch atop the aviary, and they are relatively easy to place back inside. If you have not been so fortunate—I’m sorry!

The owner of the company, as you can imagine, has had plenty of experience dealing with escapee birds, but she has never had one escape outside. Suddenly, a wide-open space takes on a whole new meaning as there is no way to reel a bird back in (inside, you have a myriad of doors you can shut, a roof, etc. to limit the possibilities of flight).

So, while Beverly (the owner) was starting to panic outside, inside the building, people were starting to coagulate to the window to witness the free entertainment. The owl finch would fly atop one bush, Beverly would follow ready to capture the bird, then suddenly, the owl finch would fly to the other bush, and naturally Beverly would follow.  She got quite the workout that day, hopping around the front yard, a green fish net in her outstretched hand as she hovered over what appeared to others to be a harmless bush!  It’s a wonder she didn’t get admitted for a psychiatric evaluation!

This story does have a happy ending; the owl finch was successfully caught and placed in his new home, where he remains very content to fly around and discover the wonderment of his beautiful new residence!

In the event you experience a bird escape from your aviary, remember the following:

  • Don’t panic, they usually like to explore very close to the aviary
  • If possible, close a door to keep the bird contained in one room
  • Locate the green fish net that is provided with the aviary
  • If you can, watch the bird for a while and see if it starts to make its way over to the aviary
  • Grab a step ladder so that you can be prepared to easily reach the height of the bird when it lands
  • Carefully place the net over the bird, with one hand and gently grab the bird with the other hand
  • Then, simply open the door to the aviary and release the bird

Remember, if you are unable or don’t feel comfortable trying to catch the bird, first try to secure the bird in a smaller area, and then look for someone who can help. If you still struggle to capture the bird, don’t hesitate to contact us (1-888-756-1693) to help walk you through the process.
