Lady Gouldians

My all time favorite bird is hands down the Gouldian Finch.  How can you not love such a vibrantly colorful bird?  The electric blue contrasting against the black head with shades of purple, green, yellow and red thrown in; amazing!  The Gouldian Finch is also known as the Lady Gouldian Finch, Gould’s Finch or the Rainbow Finch.
Breeding usually takes place during the beginning of the dry season, and is a fascinating event to witness.  As is common amongst birds, the male will do a little dance to show off his beautiful coat.  He will bob around and expand his chest ruffling his feathers to attract a mate.
After mating, a female will lay a clutch of 4-8 eggs. Both parents assist in laying on the eggs, and both are involved in the raising of the babies; another reason I love these birds! Baby Gouldian Finches become independent when they are a mere 40 days old.
