It’s Baby Time: Make Sure Your Prepared!

One of the invigorating aspects of having an indoor bird aviary in your facility is the opportunity to witness the creation of life up close. Many of you have had the opportunity to watch as your birds sit on their nest, awaiting their young. Although this is an exhilarating time, if you have never been educated on this, you may feel some anxiety. Not to worry, many of these occasions need no intervention and before long the once brand new baby is flying around the cage. However, here are some answers to questions that may arise:
How long do the birds stay in the nest after they hatch?
Finch babies will leave the nest between 11-15 days, canary babies come out around 15-17 days, and doves around 11-12 days.

If you have a baby that has fallen on the ground and cannot fly, what should you do?
There is a myth that you should not touch a baby bird; however this is not the case. If you have a young baby on the floor, pick them up and replace in the original nest. When you pick them up, if they are cool to the touch, you need to restore warmth to their bodies. To do this, hold the baby cupped in your hands for a few minutes before returning to their nest. This can help save their life.

What if another breed of bird is going in the nest with babies?
Pay attention to what the bird is doing. Other birds will help sit on eggs as well as feed the baby birds. There should only be concern if they are attacking the babies. In most cases the birds are helping out.
