Blue Capps

This little finch does surprisingly well in captivity if the conditions are adequate, but breeding is often difficult.  However, this does not keep the males from performing an extravagant mating ritual which involves the male flying to the top of a prominent perch, flattening his crown feathers while fluffing out the feathers at the base of his head.  Once the desired look is achieved, the male dances around in a nodding motion and sings a melodic courtship song!  Wow—I would be impressed!  Unfortunately, they have to impress the female Blue Capp, who expresses her interest by landing next to the male whilst he is amidst his song and dance show.  Female birds are so lucky!!

Another quality of this finch is that it is an omnivorous passerine, which means that not only does this bird enjoy a feast of seed, but occasionally likes to munch on small insects as well.
