Orange Cheeks

A permanent blush in an orange hue resides on these cute little bird’s cheeks, giving the orange cheek their distinct look and name.  This shy, nervous species are easily bullied by more aggressive birds at the feeding station; perhaps this is why these birds like to stay close together, often appearing to be cuddling!

If you are lucky to catch one of these birds singing, you will have spotted a male.  The males also help incubate the eggs for approximately 12 days.  Once the tiny babies appear, they will stay in their nests for about two weeks.  It may be hard to tell the difference between the babies and their parents, but if you look closely you may note that the babies have a slightly duller orange color in their cheeks.
